When It Gets Personal

Introduction

As we celebrate God’s love and the gift of life, this message reminds us that faith becomes real when it gets personal. In John 4, we see a desperate father encounter Jesus and discover that His grace meets us right where we are. What begins as curiosity turns into belief, and what feels hopeless is met with the life-giving power of Christ. No matter your story, Jesus invites you to trust Him, experience His grace, and find hope that reaches deeper than your greatest need.

Study Questions

1.      What is something you’ve had to travel a long distance for because it was absolutely essential to you?

2.      Read John 4:46-47. The official traveled 20 miles uphill because his son was dying. Why does desperation have a way of stripping away our pride? What are some things people tend to trust in before they finally turn to Jesus?

3.      Read John 4:48-50. Jesus confronts the crowd’s demand for "signs and wonders." Why do we often want God to prove Himself on our terms? What the difference between expecting Jesus to be a miracle worker and believing him as Savior?

4.      Read Mark 9:22–24. How does this father’s cry connect to the father in John? Why is it important for our faith to practice regular confession of our own unbelief?

5.      Read John 4:50–53. The father believes Jesus’ word before he sees the outcome. Why is trusting the word of Jesus before seeing results so important to faith? How does the fact that distance was no barrier to Jesus’ power give you comfort regarding "unreachable" situations or people in your life?

6.      Last week, Pastor Keven said, “The power of Jesus does not come into our lives as a reward for perfect faith or works, but as an act of undeserved grace.” What is the difference between works-based faith and grace-based faith? Why is that distinction important?

7.      Read and memorize Ephesians 2:8-9. Share with a friend where you’ve experienced desperation that exposed your need for undeserved grace. Search out and write down scriptures about undeserved grace and share one of them with someone this week.
