The Joy of Decrease

Introduction

In John chapter 3, we’re reminded that while we often seek recognition, we were created for something greater, to point to Jesus. Through the example of John the Baptist, we see that true joy isn’t found in being seen, but in stepping aside so Christ can be lifted up. “He must increase, but I must decrease” is the path to a life centered on Him. This message calls us to let go of pride and self-focus, and discover the deeper joy that comes from making Jesus the center of everything.

Discussion Questions

Outline

        I.            The Greater Joy. John 3:22-30

·         True joy is found when we rightly recognize Jesus as the center of our reason to celebrate.

II.            The Greater Authority. John 3:31-34

·         Decreasing ourselves means recognizing that our understanding is insufficient and that Jesus alone speaks with full authority.

III.            The Greater Outcome. John 3:35-36

·         When we assume to function as if belief is under our control, we reject the reality of Jesus’s dominion in our lives.

Study Questions

1.      Have you ever wanted recognition or credit for something only to realize later it didn’t actually bring the satisfaction you expected? What was it, and why did it matter so much at the time?

2.      Read John 3:22-26. John’s disciples were concerned that Jesus was gaining more followers. Why do we naturally compare ourselves to others or feel threatened when someone else succeeds? How do you see that play out in the church?

3.      Read John 3:27-30. John describes himself as the friend of the bridegroom who rejoices when the groom arrives. What does that imagery teach us about our role in relation to Jesus? How does that challenge the way we tend to view our place in God’s work?

4.      John said, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Why is it difficult for us to step out of the spotlight and let Jesus be the center? What does that look like at the church level? At the personal level?

5.      Read John 3:31-34 & 2 Timoth 4:3-4. How do these passages complement each other? Why do people reject or avoid truth even when it’s right in front of them?

6.      Read John 3:35-36. Believing in Jesus as Lord brings eternal life, while rejecting Him leaves a person under divine wrath. What’s the difference between knowing about Jesus and truly submitting to Him? How do you reconcile John 3:16-17 with 3:36?

7.      CALL TO ACTION: Memorize John 3:30. Share with someone an area where you are still holding onto control instead of submitting to Jesus. Find a way this week to decrease and choose to celebrate the Kingdom of God instead.
