Adversity! How do I respond?
Introduction
We all face seasons of grief, trouble, and uncertainty. Even Paul—one of the greatest missionaries—endured beatings, shipwrecks, sleepless nights, and deep sorrow. Yet through it all, he learned this truth: God meets us in our weakness, and His grace is enough.
Hardship can feel overwhelming and senseless, but Scripture shows that God uses it to strengthen and shape us, not abandon us. Whatever you’re carrying—seen or unseen—you’re not facing it alone. He is present, faithful, and working even when we can’t yet see how.

Study Questions
1. Read 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. What’s one challenge you’ve faced that you now laugh about, even if it absolutely wasn’t funny at the time?
2. Read Genesis 50:20. How does Joseph’s story of adversity compare with Paul’s? What similarities do you see in how God uses hardship for His purposes?
3. In 2 Corinthians 12:7–8, Paul asks for his “thorn” to be taken away. What does that reveal about the human desire to escape suffering? How does God’s response challenge our expectations?
4. Read James 1:2–4. How does James’s teaching deepen or clarify Paul’s message about God using adversity to shape our lives?
5. Paul said, “When I am weak, then I am strong.” How does this paradox challenge your understanding of spiritual maturity and dependence on Christ? What implications does this have for a church community serving together?
6. Share a time in your life when you learned something important about God or your faith through suffering.
7. CALL TO ACTION: Memorize 2 Corinthians 12:9. Share with someone a “thorn” or ongoing struggle you are dealing with and discuss how it shapes your faith. Pray about using your struggle to help others and then look for an opportunity to share your story.
