Plow the Hard Groud

Introduction

“Breaking Up Hard Ground” – Hosea 10

When life feels dry and unyielding, it may be that our hearts have grown hard toward the Lord. In this message from Hosea 10, we’re reminded that even when pride, pain, or disappointment have packed the soil of our souls, God still pursues us with love. He invites us to break up our hard ground, to seek Him again, and to let His righteousness rain down to bring renewal and growth.

Discussion Questions

Outline

I.                    Full of Self. Hosea 10:1-3

·         Self-reliance feels good in the moment, but it quietly hardens our hearts, isolates us from others, and blinds us to our dependence on God.

II.                  Full of Shame. Hosea 10:6-8

·         When what we build our lives on fails us, it doesn’t just leave us empty, it leaves us ashamed and wishing we could hide from the fallout.

III.                Fresh Ground. Hosea 10:12

·         No matter how hard or barren life feels, God always offers a chance to begin again.

Study Questions

1.      Have you ever tried to grow something in tough soil, or had a project that just wouldn’t get started until you really dug in? What happened?

2.      Read Hosea 10:1–3. How did Israel’s success lead them into self-reliance and away from God?  Where do you see the temptation to trust your own ability, wealth, or influence instead of God’s authority?

3.      Read Proverbs 16:18. How does pride set us up for a fall, and what does humility make possible? How does Satan use pride to destroy relationships, families, and churches?

4.      Why do you think shame is so powerful in keeping us from turning back to God? What helps someone push through and overcome shame?

5.      Last week pastor Keven said, “No matter how hard or barren life feels, God always offers a chance to begin again.” Share with your group a time God offered you a fresh start after a season of pride, failure, or spiritual brokenness.

6.      Why do you think spiritual “hard ground” develops in our hearts? Where is God inviting you to plant something new or seek a different harvest in your life this week?

7.      CALL TO ACTION: Memorize Hosea 10:12. Share with someone your “hard ground” and what steps you need to take to break it up. Take a step of obedience, humility, or total reliance on God this week.
