Life is full of moments where we stand on the edge of something greater. We feel the call to step forward, to trust, to fully commit—but something holds us back. A fear. A doubt. A sense of safety that keeps us where we are. The question is, what step of faith is God calling you to take?
In the second message of The Journey series, we explored The Threshold—the moment in our spiritual walk where we must decide if we are willing to leave everything behind and fully trust God. We looked at Matthew 14:22-33, where Peter took the ultimate step of faith—stepping out of the boat and onto the water.
Facing the Guardian
Every Threshold has a Guardian. Something stands in the way, challenging us to turn back. For Peter, it was the storm. He had spent his life as a fisherman—he knew the sea, he knew the dangers, and he knew that stepping out onto the waves was a death sentence. But Jesus was out there, calling him forward.
For many of us, our Guardian is fear—fear of failure, fear of sacrifice, fear of the unknown. It might be pride, comfort, or the expectations of others. The enemy will always place obstacles at the point of our full commitment because he knows how dangerous a fully surrendered believer is.
What is your Guardian? What is standing in the way of you taking the next step in your faith? Until you face it, you’ll never move forward.
The Step of Faith
Peter had a choice. Stay in the boat, where safety was an illusion, or step into the storm, where Jesus was. He had already been following Jesus, but this moment was different. This wasn’t just about following—it was about pursuing.
When Jesus said, “Come,” Peter didn’t hesitate. He swung his feet over the edge and stepped out. And for the first time, Peter did the impossible—he walked on water.
Have you been following Jesus but hesitating to fully pursue Him? Maybe you’ve kept one foot in safety, refusing to commit fully to the journey God has for you. But there comes a point when you have to leave the boat behind.
What’s holding you back from taking that step? What would it look like for you to trust Jesus completely?
The Point of No Return
Once Peter stepped out, there was no turning back. He was in the storm now, walking toward Jesus. And even when fear took hold and he began to sink, Jesus reached out and caught him. The truth is, the safest place Peter could be was not in the boat—it was wherever Jesus was.
The same is true for us. The safest place in your life is not in your comfort, your control, or your plans. The safest place is at the side of Jesus.
Are you willing to leave behind the illusion of safety? Are you ready to cross the threshold of faith and step into the unknown, knowing that Jesus will be there to hold you up?
Your Invitation
What step of faith is God calling you to take?
Maybe you’ve been holding back, waiting for the right moment to trust Him fully. Maybe you’ve been wrestling with fear, uncertainty, or doubt. But today, Jesus is calling you to step out of the boat. To trust Him. To leave behind the safety net and pursue Him recklessly.
Take a moment to reflect:
What has God been calling you to do that you’ve been hesitant to commit to?
What fears or obstacles have kept you from taking that next step?
What would happen if you truly surrendered and trusted Him?
I’d love to hear your story.
This is just the beginning. Next week, we’ll explore The Trials—the challenges and tests that shape us along the journey.
