I. Alone in the Struggle. John 6:16-18
· It doesn’t matter how ordinary or extraordinary the command from God, the enemy will always oppose your obedience, the wind will always push you back, and you must have Jesus with you or you will fail.
II. Lord Over the Sea. John 6:19-20
· We don’t have to be afraid, because the very thing that threatens to destroy our peace is under his feet!
III. Safe in His Presence. John 6:21
· The enemy can’t do anything about Jesus.
Study Questions
1. When was a time when something routine turned out to be much harder than you expected?
2. Read John 6:16-18. The disciples were doing what Jesus had sent them to do, but they were still struggling against the wind. What are we meant to learn about obedience and opposition through this story?
3. Read John 6:19–20. What is significant about Jesus’s words to the disciples? What is Jesus trying reveal about himself?
4. Read Job 9:8 and Psalm 77:16–20. How do these passages connect to this story and to Jesus? How would the original audience have understood this story?
5. Read John 6:21 aloud from multiple translations. How are we supposed to understand the words “willing” and “received?” What is the spiritual implication of understanding those words properly?
6. The big question from this sermon is, “Where are you going?” What have you been trying to accomplish in your own strength? What would it look like to “eagerly bring” Jesus into that circumstance?
7. CALL TO ACTION: Memorize John 6:20. Share with your small group or a trusted friend something in your life where you have been trying to row against the wind. Practice moments of complete obedience and submission, and invite Jesus into that struggle or fear.
