Value #6 We Find Purpose in God's Mission

Introduction

Mount Olive is committed to the Great Commission because God’s mission has always been global. This sermon calls us to stop “building and waiting” and start living as a sent church, taking the gospel to our homes, workplaces, community, and to the ends of the earth. Every believer shares this responsibility, whether by going, or by supporting those who go through presence, prayer, and generosity. And it all starts here: when Jesus changes our hearts, He sends us to bring His hope to others.

Study Questions

1.      When you hear the word mission, do you instinctively think of something global, something local, or something that doesn’t involve you personally? Why?

2.      Read Genesis 12:1–3. What does this passage reveal about God’s original intention for Abraham and Israel? How does it challenge the idea that God’s focus was ever limited to one nation?

3.      Read Acts 1:8. How does this passage connect to the promise to Abraham? How does the promise to Abraham connect to the modern church?

4.      Read Matthew 28:19–20. What does Jesus teach about movement and intentionality in the life of the church? In what ways might the modern church need to rethink the idea of “going”?

5.      In the sermon, Pastor Keven talked about how the church gathering is primarily for the saved, while the mission is directed toward the lost. How does that distinction challenge common assumptions about how evangelism happens?

6.      Read 3 John 5-8. Pastor Keven spoke of three ways we support missionaries: presence, prayer, and generosity. Which of these comes most naturally to you? Which requires the most growth? Which would you like to do more of?

7.      CALL TO ACTION: Memorize Acts 1:8. Live on mission! Talk with someone about the aspects of mission work you find most intimidating. Find a way to participate in the outward mission of the Gospel this week. Pray for a missionary by name and send them an encouraging note.
