The Joy of Jesus

Introduction

In this message from 2 Thessalonians 2:13–17, we’re reminded that true joy isn’t found in circumstances, possessions, or self-focus, but in Jesus. Paul encourages believers to stand firm in the hope they’ve received, rooted in God’s choosing love, the promise of sharing in Christ’s glory, and the daily encouragement that comes from grace. Especially during the Christmas season, this sermon invites us to reclaim joy by anchoring our lives in the hope of Christ, living selflessly, and letting that joy overflow to a world desperately in need of it. If you’re struggling to find joy or longing for something deeper, this message points us back to the One who gives it freely.

Study Questions

1.      What’s one tradition at Christmas you look forward to that brings you the most joy?

2.      Compare 2 Thessalonians 2:13–14 with Ephesians 1:3–5. How do these passages expand your understanding of God’s choosing a relationship with you through Jesus? How does this truth push back against feelings of unworthiness or insignificance?

3.      Paul tells the Thessalonians to “stand firm” and hold to what they were taught (vv. 14–15). What pressures or voices today make it hard to stand firm? What helps you cling to truth when joy feels distant?

4.      Last week, Pastor Keven said that God wants to replace the false narratives of your life with the true narrative of the Gospel that brings you joy. What false narratives do people tend to believe about themselves? What narratives do you struggle with and how can the Gospel replace them?

5.      Read 2 Thessalonians 2:16–17. How does knowing that encouragement and strength come from Jesus Himself change the way you approach seasons of exhaustion or discouragement?

6.      Think about the idea that joy fades when the world distracts us from our hope. What are the loudest “joy-stealers” in your daily life? What practical steps help you refocus on the hope you already have in Christ?

7.      CALL TO ACTION: Memorize Hebrews John 14:27. If you’re struggling with joy this holiday season, find someone you trust and talk through it with them. Find someone that needs encouragement or hope and do something share your joy with them.
