I. More Than a Rule Breaker. John 5:18-20

· Whether it sounds crazy or not, whether it’s understandable or not, Jesus has the same power and authority as God himself, because is not only the Son of God, he’s not only equal with God, but he IS God.

II. More Than a Miracle Worker. John 5:21-24

· Jesus didn’t come to be a miracle worker, he came to be a savior.

III. More Than a Teacher. John 5:25-30

· The same power and authority in Jesus to bring about the forgiveness of sins is also in Jesus to bring about the destruction of sinners.

Study Questions

1. What is a rule or restriction from your childhood, either at home, school, or church, that you used to think was absolute, but you eventually realized was completely arbitrary?

2. Read John 5:18–20. Why were the religious leaders so upset with Jesus? What does this reveal about how they understood God, the Sabbath, and authority?

3. The doctrine of the Trinity is an example of something that’s difficult to understand and must be taken on faith. Why is intellectual submission to a God who is bigger than our logic actually a source of comfort rather than frustration?

4. Read John 5:21–24. Why is it important that Jesus is more than a miracle worker? How should this shift our focus and our expectations?

5. Last week, Pastor Keven said, “Jesus didn’t come to be a miracle worker, he came to be a Savior.” How can Christians sometimes treat Jesus more like a fixer of circumstances than the giver of eternal life? How does acknowledging the difference strengthen our faith?

6. Read John 5:25–30 and Philippians 2:9–11. What does Jesus claim about judgment, resurrection, and eternal destiny? What does Philippians 2 tell us about our expected response to Jesus?

7. CALL TO ACTION: Memorize John 5:24. Talk with a trusted friend or your group about one specific “box” or religious rule you have been trying to force Jesus to obey. Identify where you have expected Jesus to be a “miracle worker” and practice trust and submission instead.
