Lord Of Hosts

Introduction

In this week’s message from Psalm 46, we were reminded that while life’s storms are relentless and battles are real, our God is unshakable. Just like He defended His people in the days of Hezekiah, He remains our refuge, strength, and stronghold today. When the pressures of life leave us weary, we’re called to stand firm, live fearlessly, and trust Him enough to be still; confident that He fights for His glory and our good, even in ways we cannot see.

Discussion Questions

Outline

I.                    Be Firm

·         If God is our helper, then we can have confidence that we will get through to the other side in exactly the way God wants and needs us to.

II.                  Be Fearless

·         If you want to face life fearlessly, with the courage that can only come from knowing that God will show up, then you first must align yourself to the will and identity of God.

III.                Be Still

·         God showing up in your life might not look like you think it’s going to look.

Study Questions

1.      What’s the most chaotic moment in life that you’ve experienced? What did you do to get through it?

2.      Psalm 46 begins with a declaration that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble…” What does it look like to “stand firm” in faith when life feels unstable? When is that hardest for you?

3.      Read 2 Kings 19:14-19. What did King Hezekiah do when the enemy was at the gates? How does his example challenge or encourage you?

4.      Sometimes, when God shows up it doesn’t look like we had hoped. Can you share a time when God’s answer to your prayer came in an unexpected way or took longer than you wanted?

5.      It helps to read things in multiple translations because sometimes words don’t always translate well into English. Reread Psalm 46:10 in more than one translation. How are the translations different? How do the differences inform our understanding of this verse?

6.      Psalm 46 ends with “The God of Jacob is our stronghold.” What is a stronghold? What does it mean to make God your stronghold instead of just another resource or last-minute option?

7.      CALL TO ACTION: Memorize Psalm 46:1. Talk with someone about an area in your life where you need to “be still” and trust God. Commit to pursuing God’s will and God’s identity in your life and look for ways to encourage others to do this same.
