I. The True Wandering. John 6:1-4
· Through Jesus, we find our healing and our freedom, we find our deliverance, and we find the thing we’ve been craving the entire time.
II. The True Bread. John 6:5-13
· He puts us periodically in positions of want and desperation to remind us that He is the great provider and the bread of life.
III. The True King. John 6:14-15
· How could we possibly try to drag the true King down into the mud of our sinful world and ask him to lessen His kingdom by ruling over ours?
Study Questions
1. What is the most chaotic or stressful meal or event you’ve ever had to help with where you almost ran out of something?
2. Read John 6:1–4. Why is it significant that John mentions the Passover was near? What are the parallels between this story and the story of the Exodus?
3. Read Exodus 16:11–15. How does God’s provision of manna in the wilderness help us better understand what Jesus is revealing in John 6? Why is it important that Jesus show himself greater than Moses?
4. Read John 6:5–13. Andrew finds a boy with five barley loaves and two fish, even though he admits it is not enough. What does this teach us about bringing our insufficiency to Jesus? When have you felt like what you had to offer God was far too small to make any real difference?
5. Last week, Pastor Keven said, “He puts us periodically in positions of want and desperation to remind us that He is the great provider and the bread of life.” Why do you think John emphasizes the leftovers? What does the abundance show us about the sufficiency of Jesus?
6. Read John 6:14–15. The crowd correctly identified Jesus as “the Prophet,” but then tries to make him king by force. How can people be partly right about Jesus and still misunderstand what he came to do? How can we fall into the same trap?
7. CALL TO ACTION: Memorize Philippians 4:19. Share a trusted friend or your group one specific area of your life where you have been operating out of scarcity and fear instead of trusting God’s provision. Take a step this week to surrender a limited resource to service for God’s kingdom.
