Going Public

Introduction

This sermon reminds us that baptism is far more than a church tradition, it is a powerful symbol of the new life we have in Christ. Rooted in Jesus’ command in Matthew 28:19, this message highlights baptism as a public declaration of faith, an act of obedience, and a lasting reminder of God’s saving grace. Whether you're remembering your own baptism or considering taking that step for the first time, you'll be encouraged to trust God's transforming work and boldly live out the hope you have in Jesus.

Study Questions

1.      What is a physical landmark or monument that always stands out to you? What historical event or story does it keep alive?

2.      Read Joshua 4:1–7. Why did God command Joshua to set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan River? How does this Old Testament concept of a physical memorial help us understand why we need baptism as a "spiritual landmark" in our own lives?

3.      Read Romans 6:3–4. Why is Paul’s baptism imagery used in this passage so significant? Why does the literal definition of the Greek word baptizo (to submerge or immerse) matter so much to the message of this passage?

4.      Last week, Pastor Keven said, "If you were baptized without actually giving your life to Jesus, then you just got wet and the symbol means nothing." Why is the biblical order of repentance first, then baptism, so essential? What is the danger of confusing the symbol of baptism with the source of our salvation?

5.      Read Matthew 28:18–20. Why do you think Jesus made baptism the very first instruction in His command to "make disciples"? How does viewing baptism as our "first act of obedience" challenge the idea that baptism is just optional?

6.      Read Matthew 10:32–33. What does it mean to "acknowledge" Jesus before other people? Why is it important to understand that while our salvation moment is private, our faith was never meant to be a secret? How does that connect to baptism?

7.      CALL TO ACTION: Memorize Romans 6:4. Share your baptism story and talk about how it can serve as a landmark of faith, obedience, and testimony. If you have never been baptized by immersion after giving your life to Jesus, take immediate action to submit to His authority by scheduling your baptism today.
