Better in the Shade

Introduction

This message invites us to pause and reflect on a deep, universal longing a spiritual hunger that no success, relationship, or earthly joy can satisfy. Rooted in Psalm 84, the sermon explores the psalmist’s yearning to be in God’s presence, not just out of religious duty, but out of a deep desire for the peace, joy, and security found only with Him. Through personal stories, scripture, and honest questions, we’re challenged to ask: What does your soul really crave? Are you settling for the distractions of the world, or are you pursuing the presence of God with intention? Whether you’re standing at the threshold or just beginning to recognize your longing, the invitation is clear step in. Because even one day in God’s presence is better than a thousand anywhere else.

Discussion Questions

Outline

I.                    My Soul Longs

·         If you find yourself in a place of longing, it’s because you need the presence of God.

II.                  The Shadow of Your Wings

·         If we’re not careful, we can create cultures of fear in the church.

III.                Better is One Day

·         We’ve equated our church experience with the presence of God, when our inability or unwillingness to enter God’s presence is a personal issue not a church issue.

Study Questions

1.      What’s your favorite place to go when you just want to rest, recharge or feel “at home”? Why there?

2.      “Universal longing” is the sense we all have of wanting something more out of life. How have you experienced that kind of longing, and how is God the only reasonable fulfillment of it?

3.      Why do you think God’s presence is described as a place of protection, strength, and joy? How do you experience those things when you intentionally spend time with God?

4.      Last week, Pastor Keven said, “Just showing up is not the same thing as entering the presence of God.” What do you think it means to really enter God’s presence? How does this relate to “showing up”?

5.      Read Psalm 91:1-4. What do you think of the idea of “resting under God’s wings”? Why is it so difficult for some people to trust God as their shelter and protector?

6.      Looking back on your faith journey, can you remember a time when spending time in God’s presence brought you peace, joy, or clarity? What stands out to you the most about that season of life?

7.      CALL TO ACTION: Memorize Psalm 84:10. Talk with someone you trust about your struggles with longing and with trusting God. Take steps this week to move beyond the “threshold” and choose to intentionally enter the presence of God, not just be near it.
