Be Free

Introduction

Who knew kale could teach us a lesson about truth? Just because we've believed something for years doesn't make it true and no, kale doesn't come from the ocean! In John 8:30–47, Jesus challenges us to examine the lies we believe, the identities we cling to, and the things that keep us from true freedom. And while we may get our vegetables confused, one thing is certain: True freedom isn't found in doing whatever we want, but in following Jesus!

Study Questions

1.      What is something you once thought gave you freedom, but later realized actually controlled you more than you controlled it?

2.      Read John 8:31–36. Jesus tells people who have begun to believe in him that continuing in his word leads to truth and freedom. What is significant about the way Jesus defines freedom? How does this contradict the common cultural definition?

3.      Read Romans 6:16-18. What are some ways a person can convince themselves they are free while actually being controlled by something else? How does the passage in Romans help us?

4.      Read John 8:37–42. The crowd claimed Abraham as their father, but Jesus pointed out that their hostility and lack of obedience proved their spiritual paternity was rooted somewhere else. What are some identity traps that are easy for us to fall into? How do we use these as excuses not to submit to God?

5.      Last week, Pastor Keven said, “We rewrite our identity so that we can make sense of our enslavement.” What are some identities people adopt because they feel trapped by circumstances, expectations, failures, or habits? How can those identities keep them from seeing who God says they are?

6.      Read John 8:43–47. Jesus says their inability to hear God’s truth is connected to believing the lies of the devil. Why do lies become harder to recognize the longer we live with them? What are some subtle lies that can keep Christians spiritually stagnant even after they have trusted Christ? What can we do about it?

7.      CALL TO ACTION - Memorize: John 8:36 Share with your group or a trusted friend one area where you still feel controlled, falsely defined, or trapped by a lie, and ask them to help you bring that area back to the truth of Christ. Spend time this week identifying one lie, habit, or false identity that has been shaping you. Write beside it the specific truth from Scripture that confronts it.
