Hitting the Reset Button

Introduction

In this message from John 4, we are reminded that Jesus meets us right where we are and lovingly calls us to a spiritual reset. He breaks through barriers, restores true worship, and offers the living water our hearts have been longing for. This sermon is a powerful reminder that in Christ, we are fully seen, deeply loved, and invited into a real relationship with the Savior who is always near.

Discussion Questions

Outline

        I.            Resetting Culture. John 4:1-9

·         Our response and attitude toward those outside the church becomes their definition of the Kingdom of God.

      II.            Resetting Religion. John 4:10-24

·         We need to see people around us how God sees them and no longer allow culture and tradition to dictate what worship is supposed to be.

    III.            Resetting Relationship. John 4:25-26

·         God is not out there. He’s right here, ready, present, and willing to step into our messy lives.

Study Questions

1.      What is one "unwritten rule" or social boundary you remember from growing up? How have things changed?

2.      Read John 4:10–15. Jesus pivots the conversation from physical thirst to a "God-shaped hole." How do people  try to fill spiritual thirst with "physical water" (career, relationships, hobbies) instead of the Living Water Jesus offers? Why is it so easy to focus on temporary needs instead of deeper spiritual ones?

3.      Read John 4:16–22. The woman tries to deflect Jesus' personal questions by starting a religious debate about the "right" place for worship. Why is it often easier for us to argue about religious traditions or church styles than to deal with the "mess" in our own lives? How do we get past this?

4.      In the sermon we were warned about “worshiping our own worship” instead of God. What are some ways religious habits or traditions can become idols? How can we better recognize and deal with them in our own walks with God?

5.      Last week, Pastor Keven said, "Our response and attitude to those outside the church becomes their definition of the kingdom of God." If someone’s only interaction with "the Kingdom" was their interaction with you this week, what would they think God is like? How are we building barriers between us and culture when we get this wrong?

6.      Read John 4:23–26. Jesus resets the relationship by using the "I Am" statement, equating Himself with the God of the burning bush. How does knowing that the "Great I Am" is not distant, but present and pursuing a personal relationship with you, change the way you approach Him

7.      CALL TO ACTION: Memorize John 4:24. Share with someone one area where you recognize the need for a spiritual reset and ask for accountability. Identify someone different from you culturally or socially and intentionally engage them in a kingdom minded conversation this week.
